Thoughts on When to Update Your Kitchen

Many of us think about updating or remodeling parts of our homes from time to time.  There are many possibilities, including the kitchen, bathrooms, room or deck additions, etc.  A “new” kitchen is often at the top of the list since it is one of the busiest rooms in the home, and there are a number of appliances which over time might become outdated.  Here are several suggestions about formalizing the decision to update or remodel the kitchen.

One starting point might be the status of lifestyle issues.  Have career issues, children’s’ or parents’ issues, decisions on where to live, etc., stabilized so that you are likely to remain in the home for another 5 – 10 years?  If so, updating or remodeling could be a serious consideration.

The comparative importance of the kitchen in the family’s current needs will help you decide how to proceed.  If everyone is very busy and meals are more of a requirement than an activity, and the family would love to have a new entertainment room, then the new kitchen might wait a few years.  If, however, the kids and neighbors hang out in your kitchen a lot of the time, kitchen changes could move to the top of the list.

If a move to a new house is around the corner, it might be very valuable to update the kitchen to make the house more desirable for a potential buyer.  There are considerations as to the percentage of a room Read the rest of this entry

10 Things to Do to Remodel Your Kitchen Faster

our kitchen

Remodeling a kitchen can be a very big job.  Depending on the extent of the remodeling project, remodeling a kitchen can take weeks or even months.  There are, however, some things you can do to remodel your kitchen faster.  The ten ideas listed below will get you started on ways to remodel your kitchen faster and still have a finished room that shows quality work and attention to details.

1.  Work with the existing space if at all possible.
Moving walls takes a great deal of time. It is also costly. If you are trying to update or remodel, try to think creatively about how you can make better use of the existing space. If you are trying to enlarge the kitchen, try to do so by moving or removing only one wall. This will reduce the amount of electrical work, as well as the amount of framing and drywall work necessary.

2.  Don’t move the sink. Moving plumbing also takes a great deal of time, and adds significant cost to your project.  Even if you are replacing the sink, keeping it in the same location will save the time of rerouting pipes, which could also result in the need for work to replace flooring.

3.  Don’t move a gas line or gas appliances. Moving a gas line will take additional time in completing your kitchen remodel.  In many localities, this will require the assistance of a professional.  You will need to schedule Read the rest of this entry

Clean Kitchen Counter .... 23/366

The secret to saving thousands of dollars on kitchen cabinets is slowly getting out to the general public. Retail prices have doubled in the past few years because of their high overhead expenses: gas prices, rent increases and also the cost of labor. While cabinets have been available on-line for years, the Internet kitchen cabinet business is exploding. More and more people are finding out that they do not have to pay high retail prices for kitchen cabinets.

It makes sense. If you can buy something online, you are probably going to save money. Simple economics puts a retail store at a disadvantage. The store has a large amount of overhead and shipping costs that also need to be hidden in the retail prices. At the same time, an internet store has little overhead and is often linked to a direct importer. However, always remember to shop around online. Many places offer good prices, but with a little searching and a few good key words, you can turn up even better deals.

I mentioned key words and this means that there are certain buzzwords in the kitchen cabinet business that you should know. The most important phrase is RTA kitchen cabinets. This simply means ready to assemble. Most kitchen cabinets are not assembled; however a retail store will assemble them for you and charge you plenty. All you need to know is that RTA kitchen cabinets Read the rest of this entry

kitchen 1924

With the onset of the credit crunch more and more of you are shunning the restaurants and cooking at home. So it is no surprise that you would like to replicate the food experience when you go out and there are many recipe books that are designed to help you achieve this. Whilst the recipe books will certainly help in helping you achieve a range of good meals, sometimes it is the lack of having the right specialist kitchen equipment and Kitchen Accessories which may let you down. Having the right accessory can make that all important difference from changing an average meal to a fabulous one.

The definition of kitchen accessories is a difficult one. I don’t agree with the idea that cooking or kitchen accessories include items such as saucepans, frying pans, bakeware and small kitchen appliances such as mixers and food processors. These items are part of a standard kitchen and will be in most, if not all, kitchens.

In fact, I always think of kitchen accessories are those items that add value to the cooking process which you do not get from a standard piece of kitchenware or are a traditional kitchen tool or gadget but has been designed in a way that it adds more than just its purpose.

Personally I like the some of the smaller items such as a citrus zester, a reamer, a pestle and mortar or a parmesan grater. These kitchen accessories certainly add value Read the rest of this entry

The renovation is one of the most difficult tasks to be accomplished. Sometimes, it becomes the headache and a reason for tension in ones life. However, for some people takes it very easy to renovate their complete house or any portion of the house. Why there is so much difference in the views for the same thing? It is only because some people do the proper planning in advance and execute it in the same manner. But some people do the renovation with no experience and planning. It is recommended to the inexperienced people to take the services of the professional decorators; specifically for some of the areas of the house like bathroom or kitchen. Kitchens Replacement Versus New

Kitchen miracle

Are you thinking of redesigning your kitchen this year? Remember to shop around and get as many quotes as possible, at least three. The cost of the design and installation can vary widely depending on where you live in the UK, London being the most expensive whilst west Wales being the cheapest area.

Storage

Kitchens always seem to have not enough storage space-

Not enough – if you don’t have enough space for everything you need to store in your kitchen, consider creating a suspended saucepan rack that makes use of ceiling space. Also the tops of kitchen wall units can be used as extra shelf and storage space, though they are prone to dust. (Who wants to clean on top of cupboards?)

Too much – a room can be too large; some kitchens are designed with too many cupboards. You will always find items to fit the space available. Throw out unused gifts and gadgets and any sell-by date items, this can often halve your tins and packets within your cupboards. Walls and walls of cupboards are unnecessary in a kitchen and getting rid of some may much needed space for a breakfast bar or another appliance.

Replacement kitchen vs replacement doors

If you are happy with the layout of your appliances and storage within your kitchen, then replacing you kitchen doors may be more cost-effective than full replacement. Changing a few elements from the list below will give your kitchen a new fresh look:

Re-tiling or replacing splash-backs with melamine faced chipboard. There are Read the rest of this entry

Best Kitchen Award Favors Utilitarian Design

Retro Kitchen 1960's

The latest look in kitchens is spacious, pristine, neutral clear cut lines and totally clutter-free. This was the look that carried off the 2008 Regional Chrysalis Award for The Best Kitchen Remodel. It is indicative of the look favored by Arclinea who worked on the design with architects Ruhl Walker.

Supreme care has been taken with every detail in this kitchen, with a silent stainless and glass hood fan ensuring total peace. The most functional parts of the kitchen are enclosed behind large streamlined closet doors, which blend in so well with the room that they almost appear to be another wall.

Simplicity would appear to be the hallmark of this company. In one of the designs favored by them, much of the functional clutter (i.e. the dishwasher, all the smaller kitchen appliances and the food storage areas) are enclosed behind huge tall closet doors.

However, there is no cramped feeling inside, there is space for pantry storage and room to maneuver trolleys on wheels etc. With most of the working of the kitchen kept here, the need for clutter is gone. In the kitchen proper, a large deep kitchen sink and stainless steel stove complement the palest of silver gray granite work surfaces.

With walls, doors and paintwork in white, neutrals and stainless steel, one almost gets the feel of an office rather than a kitchen. In this respect the designer does give a whole different feel to a ‘kitchen’. Even the handles of Read the rest of this entry

Making your Dream Kitchen a Reality

3.00 a.m. in the kitchen

You’ve probably heard the saying ‘the kitchen is the heart of the home’. It’s certainly true that we spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and because it is a very functional room there are certain requirements that need to be met in order for it to perform at its best.

But as with everything, it comes with a price tag. That’s why it’s worth spending some time thinking about what you really want, and experimenting with some floor plans to see what you could do and how much it would cost.

When doing a floor plan, make sure you use graph paper and draw your kitchen to scale, including all the power points, radiators, doors and windows. You can then see exactly what room you have to play with.

You might find it easier to pick a kitchen range you like to begin with – then you will know what options you have in terms of cabinets and white goods. The easiest place to start is with the sink and the oven and hob, as these will probably be in the same place they are now. If you want to move either one – which you may do if your sink isn’t in the traditional spot underneath the window – you will need to factor in the cost of moving the plumbing to accommodate it.

It’s important to try and distinguish between ideas that are practical and those that Read the rest of this entry

Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook – Part 1

kitchen

First of all, cleaning the kitchen and the sinks are both a part of the cooking routine. We cannot be too cautious with the cleanliness of our sink and counter tops when it involves food items like raw chicken, beef or other food that could leave threatening contaminants that are unseen. We normally use our kitchen sink to rinse a chicken before we prepare it for our meal. We also use our kitchen sink to pour food particles down a garbage disposal. Remants of this food that are left behind, whether it be a piece of raw chicken or any other type of meat or food product, are dangerous and could cause grave illnesses to your family members if not cleaned up.

One of the best habits a cook can have is cleaning as you go. It only takes a minute to wipe the sink and counter down, and it makes your job so much easier. Another excellent habit would be to wipe up food spills immediately as they happen. Clean that stove up right away so that the food does not cling to it and leave an unsightly mess that draws germs and other pesky things like cockroaches. In my kitchen, I use a kitchen cleaner with bleach. I use it on all of my kitchen surfaces, and I rest assured that my kitchen is clean and free from any contaminants.

Make it a habit to do a thorough wipe-down of your entire stove after every use. Clean the back splash Read the rest of this entry
