Kitchen Flooring

Night time kitchen

The right kitchen flooring can not only make your life easier, but it has the ability to set the mood for the entire room. The three main factors to consider when deciding on the type of flooring for your kitchen are durability, use, and style. We’ll start by taking a closer look at some of the most popular choices in kitchen flooring.

With its warmth and inviting tone, hardwood flooring creates a traditional feeling in any kitchen. Hardwood floors are known for their beauty and prestige and are sturdy surfaces that are easy to clean. One of the most popular types of hardwood floors is oak which is neutral in color and very durable. Other popular types of wood used for flooring are ash, cherry and walnut.

Hardwood floors come in two types: solid and engineered. Solid flooring is cut from single pieces of wood and worked into desired shapes. Solid hardwood floors come in strip flooring which are nailed to sub-flooring, plank flooring which has wider boards, and parquet flooring which comes in squares or geometric shapes to create different patterns.

Engineered flooring is created by laminating thin sheets of wood together in a crisscross pattern for strength. They are then topped with a veneer of hardwood to add strength. Engineered flooring holds up better than solid flooring when exposed to changes in moisture and humidity. This makes it a good choice for below-ground floors. Engineered hardwood floors come in strips and planks.

Kitchen Renovation Ideas – Blend the Old With the New

our kitchen

An old friend of mine moved into a beautiful, late 19th century, Victorian style home a little more than 12 months ago. At a recent party she held at the home many of the guests commented about the quaint old fashioned style of the kitchen and how cozy and friendly it seemed. At this point my friend declared that she and her four children all absolutely hated the kitchen area and would love to renovate and modernize it but were utterly daunted by the task and so had not attempted it.

Her main fear was the perceived high cost of renovating an old home as she had heard many home improvement horror stories – People spending tens of thousands of dollars on what started out to be quite modest renovations, only to find a number of non-budgeted repairs and maintenance were also required, therefore significantly blowing out the estimated costs. My friend did not relish the idea of finding herself in a similar predicament so the idea of undertaking restoration and renovation work had been shelved. One of the guests at the party was a builder and another a professional interior decorator and they both explained that while restoration work (restoring the building to ‘as new’ condition similar to when the building was originally constructed) was quite extensive and time consuming, however, a renovation (modernization) project was relatively cheap.

Kitchen Renovation Ideas – Without The Fear Factor

Most homeowners, my friend included, have the perception that old Read the rest of this entry

Black Kitchen Appliances- Sleek, Sophisticated, Serious

1963 Geneva steel kitchen

Black is the new black in the kitchen fashion world. In many cultures, the colour black is symbol of authority and modesty and is a sign of due respect. In Japanese culture, black is a symbol of nobility, age and experience and a black belt is a mark of achievement and seniority in martial arts such as karate and judo. But even in the UK, Black Tie functions are a type of sophisticated and smart gathering, black also denotes prestige- many limousines are black and traditionally our police cars were black and white, demanding respect and authority.

Black kitchen appliances certainly demand and earn that respect. The simple uniform colour looks sleek and modest in a wooden kitchen and blends in perfectly with dark wood surfaces, but also contrasts brilliantly with opposite colours such as white and even stainless steel cupboards and worktops. Black is a truly versatile colour.

Most top kitchen manufacturers offer a choice of black kitchen appliances, including refrigerators and freezers, cookers, dishwashers, washing machines and even wine coolers amongst others. There are a couple of options available to you if you want to redesign your whole kitchen with black appliances. You can obviously buy the whole appliance, but depending on your budget, there is an option to cheat in some cases until you have the money to buy the real thing. Some manufacturers have begun to produce black frames for appliances that you may have already purchased. This is not available in all Read the rest of this entry

Organize your kitchen by clearing the clutter – Part 3

Llyn Idwal - Devils Kitchen

Clutter is the bane of many a person’s existence, that cringe inducing feeling one gets when our house, room, or kitchen is not as we had envisioned it -clean and orderly. Our next step- get organized, an overwhelming thought, but how?

There are two rooms in a house that should be always kept clean-the bathroom and the kitchen. A messy kitchen can make even tasks like cooking, cleaning, and family dinners a nightmare.

When organizing your kitchen by clearing out the clutter, a person should view it as cleaning up a dozen little messes instead of one big mess which can seem insurmountable and take hours. With that in mind, here are some steps a person should take when organizing their kitchen by clearing the clutter.

Utensils

Are you one of those people whose utensils are cluttering up the kitchen? Whose kitchen drawer has over a dozen spatulas? Do you glance around your kitchen and find, to your amazement, that you have a half a dozen slotted spoons, can openers and laddles? If you are nodding yes, then you have a utensil problem and the only way to get help is to clear the clutter and the only way to clear the clutter is by getting rid of the extra utensils.

Here are a few general rules when cleaning out your utensil drawers: Toss the cheap plastic utensils which are easily damaged and probably rarely used, and keep the stainless steel and wooden utensils which are of better quality. Second, recently married, Read the rest of this entry

Before you start to renovate your kitchen, you should keep the following points in mind:

Different Types of Stone Kitchen Islands

my kitchen in AT!

Natural stone countertops are one of the most popular choices for kitchen islands today. There are three different types of stone that are commonly used for countertops: limestone, marble, and granite. There are advantages and disadvantages to each of these options and you just need to make sure that you make the choice that is best for you and your kitchen. Stone kitchen islands are available both online and in kitchen remodel stores. If you are interested in installing one in your home, research your different options first!

Limestone, which is a sedimentary rock that is composed mostly of mineral calcite, provides a clean, smooth look for any surface due to the fact that there is not much graining. However, it is more common for floors and shower walls because it is absorbent and more likely to stain than either marble or granite. People often choose limestone if they want a stone that is a lighter color, such as a beige, gray, or white, but if your kitchen island is going to be in an area that sees high traffic and lots of grease, this choice is not the best one for your kitchen.

Marble is a popular choice due to its classic and beautiful appearance. It is highly resistant to scratches, cracks, and other breakage and its soft look makes it perfect for countertops. This stone is usually a green, white, black, or grey color and gives a room almost an “Old Read the rest of this entry
