Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook – Part 13

ice cream colours in the kitchen

From my experience kitchen becomes dirty very fast than other rooms of the house. To be kept clean it requires cleaning regularly. Here are some of mt tips to keep kitchen clean while cooking.

1.Keep the cooking flame to medium always.Maximum flame can cause splashing of cooking oil on the cooking range and other vessels near the cooking range. If you are boiling milk in an open vessel, keep flame to medium to avoid fast spilling of milk all around.Again this avoids making the cooking vessels and cooking item form being burned .The hassle of cleaning vessels after burning can be avoided.

2.Try putting aluminum foil on the cooking range and to the tiles behind the cooking range. If aluminum foil becomes dirty, you can replace with another one very fast. This keeps the kitchen clean and you can avoid frequent cleaning of the area after every time you cook.

3.Avoid keeping any grocery items in the polythene cover.Keep all things in closed containers with spoon. This avoids unnecessary spilling of things every time you take things out for cooking from a cover.

4.Try closing the cooking vessels when you cook to avoid splashing .Make sure to keep the inner side of the lid facing upwards.

5.Do not hold any container by its lid.If you have not closed the lid properly ,the container may fall down and you have to clean everywhere. If there is any spillage, clean immediately.

6.Keep cutting boards and knife washed after every use.Make sure to wash these in hot water occasionally.Cutting all vegetables before cooking helps Read the rest of this entry

How to clean your kitchen using green tea – Part 1

Lola checks out the kitchen!

You might already be well aware of the health benefits of drinking green tea. Green tea is filled with antioxidants that research has shown can do wonders for your immune system, cellular functioning, and just your overall health.

But did you know that you can use green tea as a household cleaner?

Perhaps by accident this additional use for green tea was discovered, but the fact is that green tea can clean many surfaces in your home; especially in your kitchen.

You’ll save money by cleaning with green tea and you’ll be going green by using an all natural cleaner in your home. Harsh chemicals that smell terrible, damage certain surfaces, and are bad for the environment can be used less often; with your new green tea cleaner taking over cleaning duties from time to time.

So how do you clean with green tea?

First you’ll want to purchase the least expensive green tea available. There is no point to buying fancy green tea or name brand green tea. The basic store brand tea bags will do fine.

Next you’ll want to boil a few cups of water in a pot on the stove. You can also use your tea kettle to boil the water, then transfer it to a pot when it is nice and hot.

Once the water has boiled, place a couple of your inexpensive tea bags in the pot with the hot water. Just like when making green tea for drinking, let it steep for a few minutes.

Then get a clean rag or Read the rest of this entry

How to reduce hazardous products in your kitchen – Part 2

Kitchen Cabinets

Ten easy solutions to rid your kitchen of hazardous products and make an eco-friendly home. Household poisonings are a threat to your children.

1. LOOK UNDER YOUR KITCHEN SINK- Take a close look at the labels of your oven cleaner, bug sprays, wax and polishes. See the words ‘danger’ ‘warning’ ‘poison’ or

‘caution’? Those target words should tell you that you must get rid of these products. They are not safe. Most communities offer residents a household hazardous

pickup day.

2. NEVER POUR HAZARDOUS PRODUCTS DOWN THE DRAIN!

The chemicals could get into the air and pollute your living quarters not to mention

what they can do if they get on your skin or in your eyes. Call your city hall or

recycling center to understand how to dispose of these materials properly.

3. REPLACE TOXIC PRODUCTS

Choose nontoxic, biodegradable substitutes.

4. LEARN HOW TO USE KITCHEN CUPBOARD INGREDIENTS AS NONTOXIC CLEANSERS.

Learn how to make your own home-made recipes. A splendid book that is very easy to

understand and that I highly recommend is CLEAN & GREEN by Annie (Care2’s Healthy

Living channel producer). Sign up for her newsletter- it’s FREE!

5. USE NATURAL, REUSABLE SPONGES, MOPS AND ACCESSORIES

A lot of the store bought sponges with antibacterial ingredients contain harmful

ingredients. Use cloth rags instead of paper towels to save our trees. I use old,

holy t-shirts for rags to save on Read the rest of this entry

Keeping your kitchen clean – Part 17

Kitchen - June 30, 2008

Kitchens are called “the heart of the home” and for good reason. So much activity goes on in them on a daily basis. So it’s only logical that we take care to keep this area pristinely clean, primarily for safety sake. Since the cleaniness of our home greatly affects our health I believe it is important.

One of the best ways to control the build-up of clutter is cleaning while you’re working in the kitchen. Simply replacing something immediately after using it, or putting dishes in the dishwasher after completely a recipe are great ways to accomplish this. Taking the pauses in your meal preparations to tidy up will cut back tremendously in your after-meal cleanup. Wiping down counters and sweeping as a part of your after-dinner clean-up helps keeps your kitchen clean on a daily basis. Complete bigger and more time consuming tasks such as mopping, and cleaning the microwave, stove-top and refrigator, on a weekly basis. Set aside a day of the week, such as friday to do your weekly cleaning.

Also, get your kids involved, assign them each a daily task and weekly task. Allow them to rotate their chore so everyone learns to do everything. Although, keep in mind younger children shouldn’t be assigned tasks that include using cleaners and such. This wil help lighten your load and teach your children responsibity and help them learn to appreciate hard work.

A Hot Chocolate Themed Kitchen

Vintage Red and White Kitchen

Chocolate is a wonderfully versatile theme that can transform your kitchen into a cozy nook reminiscent of the comfort of hot chocolate.

The milk and dark browns of true chocolate and the creamy white of white chocolate are great colors to decorate your kitchen in. Find color accents from the foods and spices that go with chocolate: vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, chilis. The original cocoa bean comes in colors that range from yellow to red. You’re trying to evoke the richness of hot chocolate with all the trimmings: whipped cream, sprinklings of cinnamon and nutmeg and even some hot chili accents.

The advantage of chocolate themes is that you can go dark or light. If your kitchen is smaller, you might want to try a creamy white like white chocolate, vanilla or whipped cream for the walls. You can even spritz some cinnamon or nutmeg sprinkles on the walls to give them that whipped-cream-on-hot-chocolate look. Patterned wallpaper that combines chocolate colors might also be a good option. A chocolate-brown-and-white stripe might work. If the kitchen is large and well-lighted, a chocolate brown color on the walls may not be too much. Use your knowledge of your space to make the right decision.

Once you’ve figured out the walls, consider the accents. Creamy white chocolate walls will get a boost from milk or dark chocolate browns on the door frames, doors, windowsills and floors. Chocolate browns also work well for your counters, dish towels, plates and kitchen Read the rest of this entry

Organize your kitchen by clearing the clutter – Part 29

Depression Era Soup Kitchen Close-up - St. Louis, Missouri

Sure, you may love to cook, but you hate cooking in your kitchen. Your crowded counter tops and cupboards have you in a stranglehold. You can hardly slice an onion, much less fashion gourmet meals. It’s time to get things in order.

If you watch cooking shows you’ll notice that decorative items are seldom seen on counter tops. This is because clutter detracts from efficiency. Just like TV chefs, you want to wield your kitchen skills with effortless grace; so apply the no-clutter principal and relocate your chotchkies to another place in the house.

Next, be honest with yourself about how you cook. You might wish you used your shiny stand mixer all the time, but you don’t. Move the mixer (or other unused appliances) to a cupboard or handy spot in the garage. If your kitchen is small, you need the extra counter space more than you need the personal statement the mixer makes. (You can bring it back out when you are expecting company).

On the other hand, if you find you are always digging your food processor out of the cupboard, go ahead and put it within easy reach. It’s okay to keep appliances on the counter top if you actually use them.

Empty your gadget drawers. Pick out the tools you use on a regular basis and put those in your handiest drawer. Keep like items together (one place for wooden spoons, another for spatulas, and so Read the rest of this entry

Keeping your kitchen clean – Part 20

Kitchen and Living Roomg

Responsibility and pride are two main factors to keeping a clean kitchen. With those two traits, you are sure to hum through every meal. Responsibility is the act of cleaning up after the meals and pride is what you feel when you don’t have to feel embarrassed about having people over for supper. But in order to keep a clean kitchen, you should first start with a clean kitchen. Here is how to deep clean a kitchen:

When cleaning any room, you should start at the top because dirt falls. Knock down all the cobwebs and take down your light shades and wash them in soapy water. Knock any bugs from the light fixtures.

Empty out all the cabinets, both upper and lower, and wash the insides with an all-purpose cleaner. Don’t forget any drawers. This is the time to reline the shelves if needed. Before putting things back in the cabinets, think about whether you had them filled in a good, workable order. Maybe it’s time to do some rearranging or weeding out. Refill the shelves.

Scrub the outside of the upper cabinets with an all-purpose cleaner. Floor stripper also works well for this job, to remove all build-up, and won’t hurt the cabinets. If your handles are tarnished, you might consider taking them off the doors and soak them in water, to be cleaned.

Next in height comes the hood fan. Here is where the real work begins. You need to pull the stove out of its cranny. Be careful not to Read the rest of this entry

Why Use Granite Flooring for Kitchen?

Mondrian Kitchen

Well, granite is one of hardest, durable and long lasting natural stones, with added qualities of aesthetics, less maintenance and, most importantly, being easy to clean, that is the reason for granite to be used more specifically in kitchens. These are some of the qualities granite can provide for floorings which cannot be beaten.
The combination of granite floors and kitchen is remarkable. Kitchen happens to be one of the places in the house where the floor is subjected to spills, drop of things and etc., subjected with the cleaning and durability issues. Hence one can depend on the ever relying capabilities of granite flooring to address these concerns. Also granite provides multiple choices of colors to match with your kitchen.
Granite is acid and alkali resistant; hence you can be rest assured that oil, boiling water, tea, coffee, fizzy sugary drinks or sauces would impact the flooring. Your cutlery or glassware splintering would not harm it in any way, just need to clear the rubble and mop the floor. As a routine all you need to do is sweeping and mopping with warm water and a mild detergent soap.
This routine will disallow scratches to granite, which can be caused by quartz (sand like material). Restoration of badly scratched granite may turn out to be an expensive affair, with a possibility of alteration in the granite color as well. Except for this single standalone disadvantage, the other qualities and properties of granite make it a first choice for kitchen Read the rest of this entry

Organize your kitchen by clearing the clutter – Part 31

Christmas kitchen

We all know it feels better to have a neat house, but how can we achieve it? Start in the kitchen: Clear the clutter and organize your kitchen with these ways to simplify this important area in the home.

Take everything off your counters, put the appliances you use the most where they make the most sense, and put the rest away to give yourself room to work. Forget your best intentions and be realistic. If you have not touched something in several months, it does not need to be easily accessible. If you have not used something for an entire year, it is time to liberate yourself from the clutter it creates.

Clear out your refrigerator before every shopping trip. Twice per year, clean even the so called non-perishables. You might be surprised by the dates on the jars and bottles of things you seldom use. Even mustard has a finite shelf life. At least once per year, defrost the freezer and clean out the fridge and freezer. By reducing the clutter, you can easily see what your real meal planning options are.

Reorganize the pantry before each shopping trip. Put seldom used items in back, frequently used items up front. If you buy in bulk, just keep what is needed in the cupboard at any one time and hide the rest away in another place for longer term storage. By keeping up with the pantry organization, you Read the rest of this entry
