For Kitchen Counters – Granite Rocks…!

Most lumps of granite feel much more at home pointing upwards into the sky than flattened under a rolling pin in your kitchen! For this reason, granite counter tops need some understanding and care as they are made from a natural product, which is being used ‘out of context’ so as to speak

Granite counter tops can be very expensive, but as they can last a lifetime, they may work out to be a bargain price if you are sure that you are settled into your ‘dream’ home.

One of the reasons that granite is so expensive is because it is not a man-made material and it is heavy to transport and may even break during the process. Apart from its difficulty in maneuvering, it also needs expertise in cutting, fitting and handling. Because this is not a do-it-yourself option it costs more to install than regular counter tops.

However, being ‘rock’ it is tough and may withstand more of a beating than your average counter top. For instance chips and scratches can be repaired and you can stand hot pots on it with no problem.

Chips and scratches can be re-finished by an expert; scratches can be sanded and buffed away and even deep chips can be repaired. A specific technique is used whereby the chip is encircled and lifted out by drilling a complete circle around it. A circle of granite the same size and color is then dropped into the drilled out Read the rest of this entry

Why lemon juice is a handy kitchen cleaner – Part 1

Kitchen - the place to meet

Lemon is a very versatile fruit as well as a cleaner. I love it because it is natural so of course there are no harsh chemicals to inhale, just a nice citrus fresh scent. Lemons can be used in SO many ways! Here are a few of my favorite ways to use lemon around your kitchen as a cleaner.

You can use it to get smells out of your microwave by placing a cup of water and half a lemon inside of it and microwaving it for about 2-3 minutes. It will make it easy to clean off any stuck on food as well as taking any odors out.

Cut about half a lemon into wedges and place it into your garbage disposal and turn it on. It will eliminate any odors that are festering in there.

For odors and stains on your cutting board, first places table salt on the stain and then rub it with a lemon wedge. This not only removes tough stains but odors as well.

It cleans and deodorizes your kitchen sink. you can make a paste consisting of lemon juice and salt and then gently rub into your sink. It will leave it sparkling as well as with a clean scent.

Why lemon juice is a handy kitchen cleaner – Part 2

1951 Clever Armstrong Kitchen

Lemon juice is a handy kitchen cleaner in my house. It can clean the toughest of grease and adds a fresh smell to the cleaned surface. Living in an area with hard water? It can be used to reduce the scum. In this article, I will share how I use lemon juice as a cleaner.

Microwave – I use lemon juice to clean my microwave. Just cut a slice of lemon into a microwave bowl filled with some water. Keep for 30 sec on high and remove. Then wipe it clean. All the oily splashes after making a fish fry and other possible splashes of any dishes can me made clean this way. It leaves a fresh smell of lemon inside the microwave as it is a odor absorber.

Electric water boiler – According to the instruction manual of my water boiler, a slice of lemon has to added along with some water and boiled. The rising steam is enough to clean the electric boiling pot. As per the manual, other forms of dish washing liquid cannot be used to clean the water boiler.

Garbage disposal – I would pour lemon juice for garbage disposal. Then I would add baking soda and few pieces of ice to dispose th garbage. Then I would switch on the garbage disposal.

Cleaning the refrigerator – I would squeeze lemon juice to water and wipe the refrigerator clean. Keeping a slice of lemon to absorb the odor of refrigerator is a good way to keep Read the rest of this entry

Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook – Part 18

Moritz' kitchen

The way that I learned to keep my kitchen clean when I cook is so easy. I learned from my Mother and she learned from her Mother.

When you have a large cooking project or even a small one, the best thing to do is to fill your kitchen sink up with hot water and detergent. While you are doing what you do, each time you get through with a bowel or pot put it in the sink and let it soak. This will also give the water a chance to cool off.

While you are moving around in you kitchen doing what you do, stop and wash the dishes. As you finish preparing the food that you are cooking put the dishes in the sink and as soon as you finish one thing, wash those dishes, wipe off the counter and if you can wipe the stove, change the water as necessary.

By the time you get done with all that cooking your dishes and pots will be clean and all you have to do is sit down and admire all the work you have done with no dishes left over to wash until the meal has been consumed, then somebody else can wash them.

Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook – Part 20

Kitchen HDR

Being a mother with two toddlers, I understand the need for a clean and relatively germ-free environment…especially where I cook. And believe it or not, it is quite simple and I manage to do it in a way that also saves time after the meals have been served.

I look in the fridge, spot some chicken, take it out. Mmmm, so delicious, yet such a breeding ground for bacteria if one isn’t cautious. I ponder just how to prepare it and as I do so, I remove some vegetables from the fridge and take out a bag of pasta. Step one; fill the sink up with hot and soapy water.

Cut up the chicken, chop and dice the veggies. Oh, look, drop the utensils and cutting board in the hot, soapy water immediately to kill the germs and start the soaking process. Step two; don’t cut different types of foods on the same surface without wiping it down-another use for that hot and soapy water.

All cut up and ready to cook? Once your food is in the oven, on the stove, preparing away, wash up those dishes you may have used while getting ready. Let them air-dry while you wipe down the counters, put away the remainder of your ingredients, and occupy your family, talk on the phone, or whatever it is you happen to do while making a meal.

As you strain the pasta, mix the sauce in or add spices, put the newly soiled dishes in the sink Read the rest of this entry

Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook – Part 22

pronto! my tiny kitchen

I grew up on a farm. Many days were spent feeding our family and the farm help. Mom used to cook in large quantities. If we were not cooking regular meals, we were canning produce or blanching items for the freezer. It was a must to clean as you cooked otherwise the kitchen was never clean.

Here are some easy steps to clean as you cook. These steps work well if you are working alone in the kitchen or if two people are working together. One person can cook and the other can clean.

1. If you have a double sink, fill one side with warm soapy water ready for washing dishes. Keep the other side of the sink empty for cleaning vegetables and rinsing washed dishes, etc. For a single sink, use a plastic dishpan. You should still have enough room to rinse dishes or work on vegetables. Make sure the dish drainer is empty. If you have a dishwasher, make sure it is ready to be loaded for a new cycle of washing dishes.

2. The longer food is allowed to sit on dishes and pots and pans, the more work it is to clean them. Therefore, when you finish with an item, put it in the soapy water. When you have a break from cooking, like waiting for water to boil, etc., wash the dishes in the sink, rinse them, and put them in the dish drainer or the dishwasher depending on Read the rest of this entry

Keeping your kitchen clean – Part 22

1935 Armstrong Kitchen

Keeping your kitchen clean is an easy job if you organize everything. Like the old saying “a place for everything and everything in its place.” If you have small children or even teenagers labeling where everything goes might keep everything organized. With children anyplace is the right place so with labeling they will always know where the utensils belong. This doesn’t mean to become anal about the placements of your kitchen items we really don’t want to annihilate the people we are trying to enlist to help.

Another trick is that when you are preparing a meal clean as you go, that way after the meal is ended when you really don’t feel like cleaning most of the work is already done. Having a bowl for scraps and trash as you cook will keep your counter clean and soaking the pots and pans will also make cleaning easier.

After the meal while you are wrapping and putting the leftovers away make sure you put your dishes in the hot soapy water. Dishes are easier to wash if food isn’t stuck to them. If you really want to make clean-up easier delegate the responsibility of the dishes to other members of the family. It’s everyone responsibility to ensure that the house stays clean.

If you have very small children enlisting their aide to clear the table and wipe it off will help train them to assist with the chores and will make them feel good Read the rest of this entry
