Kitchen: After

Black is one of the most dramatic colors that can be used in home decorating. It always makes a statement when it’s used effectively, and can be at home in a variety of decors. But like all good things, it must be used in moderation.

Black kitchen cabinets can be very effective in a contemporary design. These will of course have a range of colors like white and black paired to create a contrast, or the black cabinets can be paired very nicely with metal or steel appliances. This can create a high tech, very modern design, and with the proper lighting this can be a wonderfully unique approach.

The pairing of black and white is quite popular. They can be used as a checkerboard pattern in the floor tile or a backsplash, and the appliances and cabinets can be set up as contrasting elements again. Often in a setting like this is works well to have an island or a kitchen cart that has black elements to work as the contrasting piece.

Black also works well with traditional hardwoods. The black element can be a countertop, perhaps in marble. An alternative is to use a black cabinet as the kitchen island to contrast the more traditional hardwood cabinets. Once again the judicious use of black is important, because too much will darken the room dramatically, especially when used with hardwoods. When using it with metal or white the lighting can be more forgiving.

Black can make a great addition to your kitchen’s decor, but be sure to use it in moderation which will highlight it more effectively.
