Kitchen miracle

Are you thinking of redesigning your kitchen this year? Remember to shop around and get as many quotes as possible, at least three. The cost of the design and installation can vary widely depending on where you live in the UK, London being the most expensive whilst west Wales being the cheapest area.

Storage

Kitchens always seem to have not enough storage space-

Not enough – if you don’t have enough space for everything you need to store in your kitchen, consider creating a suspended saucepan rack that makes use of ceiling space. Also the tops of kitchen wall units can be used as extra shelf and storage space, though they are prone to dust. (Who wants to clean on top of cupboards?)

Too much – a room can be too large; some kitchens are designed with too many cupboards. You will always find items to fit the space available. Throw out unused gifts and gadgets and any sell-by date items, this can often halve your tins and packets within your cupboards. Walls and walls of cupboards are unnecessary in a kitchen and getting rid of some may much needed space for a breakfast bar or another appliance.

Replacement kitchen vs replacement doors

If you are happy with the layout of your appliances and storage within your kitchen, then replacing you kitchen doors may be more cost-effective than full replacement. Changing a few elements from the list below will give your kitchen a new fresh look:

Re-tiling or replacing splash-backs with melamine faced chipboard. There are now loads of designs.

Changing door handles

Adding wicker baskets to make the room seem rustic

Painting cupboard doors

Changing doors (some companies do a replacement door fitting service)

Changing work tops adding granite or solid wood to boost your overall look.

Add new elements e.g. Stainless steel cooker hood, new sink, try an under mounted sink with new modern taps.

Changing appliances so they are integrated not stand alone appliances.

The magic triangle

A lot is said about the ‘golden triangle’ method of kitchen design and there are quite a few variations on these themes, but common sense should be used, equipment and work areas should be grouped together to allow the user to operate effectively and efficiently while cooking.

The problem with the triangle theory is that husbands and wife’s rate their most used equipment differently. Some would choose the cooker, refrigerator and sink, others might say that the dishwasher or microwave is their most used items. You may find that it is too cost restrictive to move the plumbing for a sink or dishwasher, so these items should be the focal point of the ‘triangle’.

If you plan to install a brand new kitchen think before you decide to do it yourself because: bad kitchen installation can ruin an expensive kitchen. In my opinion always get a firm of professionals in.
