How To Be A Cat, Lesson 12: Kitchen Roll

As the old English saying goes – “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” And the English sure did hit the nail on the head, when they said that! There are few things more important than hygiene in ensuring that we live a healthy and fruitful life in this world.

And, when it comes to hygiene, the maximum amount of attention needs to be paid to the food we eat and the methods and the environment in which we prepare it. In fact, it may be said that the health of any family is directly proportional to the cleanliness maintained in the kitchen!

Hygene in the kitchen does not begin and end with washing and cleaning the meat, vegetables and fruits that we use in cooking. It is equally important that the various cooking surfaces and the cooking gear we use are cleaned regularly. For example, no matter well we wash our vegetables if we store them in an unclean refrigerator they are bound to rot faster. Similarly, however well we clean the meat, if the cutting board and knives that we use to slice it are unclean, the meat will spoil.

Wooden spoons and ladles that are used in cooking, tend to accumulate a lot of germs if stored when still wet. They need to be dried completely and replaced frequently. A cutting board is an article that can store a lot of germs and microbes, and needs regular cleaning with hot water.

The kitchen sink is another area to which scant attention is paid. The sink is the area which deals with food items before and during preparation and after consumption. Still, many times it is grossly ignored. Kitchen sinks need to be washed with hot water and disinfectant soap regularly to ensure that no harmful germs are lurking around in the corners.

And last but not the least, is the kitchen wipes and kitchen napkins. These tend to not only accumulate germs but also the odors from various foods. They need to be washed in hot water everyday and replaced frequently to maintain hygiene.

Thus it is important not only to clean the perishables, but to also ensure that the stove, kitchen counters, cabinets and working gear in the kitchen are cleaned regularly and replaced as required to ensure good health of the family.
