It is hard because my cabinets are old. I am planning on putting newer hinges and handles on them.

If you want modern then paint the pine. If you do not want to paint them because you love the wood, then work with the wood colour..pine has a natural yellow colouring, so whatever paint colour you choose, then ensure it has a yellow undertone or the colour will fight against one another. Yellows, browns, deep burnt orange, moss or olive greens in medium hues would look great. If your pine is stained dark, then choose a light tone for your paint colour. Personally I would paint the pine an off white, add a classic colour on the walls, dark countertops, medium dark flooring, and medium/dark hardware. Choose a sleek, simple table/chair combo with straight lines. Simple, uncluttered countertops..undercabinet lighting…recessed ceiling lights…few to no knick knacks anywhere and keep small appliances off counters if possible. This all adds to a more contemporary look.
It is nice to have a modern looking kitchen but I suggest you mix it with vintage style as it would look more classy and modern at the same time. A lighter shade of paint in the wall would look nice as it would emphasize the design of your kitchen. Place things at the right place this would add value on the design. Make your kitchen as spacious as possible so it would look nice and clean.
Pine is VERY modern if you do it right…the hinges and pulls should be silver or chrome..why not try for a medium gray on the walls and then accents of RED and BLACK around the kitchen…it will work well with the older kitchen..
Have fun.

i’d repaint the cabinets white and the walls a mocha grey color with black and white accessoriess
maybe aqua walls and gray paint for the cabinets. pine and modern are largely incompatible, in my opinion
We are thinking of doig the same. I am thinking for my own kitchen a pine colour. My walls are hunter green.
