It depends on the lighting in your kitchen. If you have little light (example: not many windows, lots of shadowed off space) Then you should pick a color a bit more of a light shade. If you have lots of light
Its easier to get away with darker shades.
Here is a list of good colors according to lighting:
LITTLE LIGHT:
shades of beige and tan
Creamy white
Light creamy yellows
Some light pinks or blues (maybe)
Light apricot shades
Light teal
Light sage green
LOTS OF LIGHT:
Coffee brown
Tomato red
Orange/reds
Darker shades of green

I like the golds and yellows with red as an accent color. I have honey oak cabinets, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances. Check out the colors you like against the new cabinets since they take up more space physically and visually. If that doesn’t help, look at the colors you like and place them against the countertop’s colors. Or, choose a color based on the view outside your kitchen window. That could connect the outdoors with the indoors.
My kitchen/family room colors of reds, golds and greens is the color scheme of my backyard in the patio umbrellas, cushions, plants etc., with orange and brown as accent colors.
