Kitchen Cabinet Refacing Versus Refinishing?

I have 24 cabinet doors. The existing cabinetry is knotty pine wood. I was given a quote of $1500 to refinish it by painting it white. How much more should refacing be? I am thinking of using thermofoil so it looks like wood.
Also, can my barrel hinge be changed over to concealed hinges?

Mr wolf is right, Pine is a nice look , refaceing is over priced thermofoil is trash it will peel after time , As for youe higes Blum make hundredsof eurapean hinges , I did my kitchen in pine yr,s ago still up to date peolpe love it,Keep the pine do,nt paint it white Good Luck

$1500 is a bit over the top.
Refinishing is different than refacing.
Certainly you can change the hinges to BLIND hinges; if the framing of the cabinets will support the one hinge plate; The opposing hinge plate will attach to the inside of the door.
No offense, but I’d probably keep the natural look.

What kind of doors? What kind of cabinets? Well, actually, since you mention barrel hinges we can assume your cabinets are face frame, and not frameless.
Do the doors have a center panel, or raised panel? Solid construction or rail and stile? These are all going to affect what options you have to choose from.
Basically, it is often less expensive to reface, than replace. But it can go either way with refinishing vs refacing…really depends on the style of the doors.
Instead of foil… why not use actual veneer? There are a variety of veneer species that come in several different ways to apply it. Most cabinet shops have the equipment to do this a number of ways.
As to how expensive your estimate is for painting… in my neck of the woods, that estimate would be considered too high. But places like CA, or large metro areas, will tend to cost more.
I’d advise getting some more estimates, and explore your other options. If you care to post a better description of your doors/cabinets, or better yet, a photo… then perhaps we can help with some more detailed advice.

refacing is cheaper,go to your local home depot they have a promotion going on where they come to your house and give you a free estimate but you need to schedule that before this week ends.or the etimate will cost $75
I would suggest you not use Therofoil either. It does yellow in just a few years. Refacing will be cheaper in the long run than replacing the cabinets. If you reface, you can easily switch to hidden hinges,from barrel hinges. I just had my kitchen done by Sears 22 cabinet doors and counter top (new) cost me $1800. Turned out great!
I must recommend against thermafoil, over short time it yellows and never resembles more than what it is, plastic. painting white is what I did myself white wash actually sort of pickled and it is a classic look that stands the test of time. the price for paint is less than refacing and with some work the hinges can be done. you have nice wooden doors save them, for as long as you can.
