Refacing Kitchen Cabinets – Is It Worth It?
Our kitchen was brand new when we moved into our house. Unfortunately, it’s ugly. The cabinets were unfinished wood that was painted – and they’re two different colors top and bottom. My husband and I have gone back and forth a million times on what to do about it – whether to refinish them ourselves, replace them entirely, or have them refaced. Having them refaced seems like the most cost and time effective solution, since there’s nothing wrong with the structure of the cabinets themselves. Will refacing work on a painted surface? Is it worth it to do this, or would we be better off just saving up for brand new cabinets? Thanks.

If you like the style of the cabinets, refinishing them is your least expensive option. If you take the time to do it right, you should be able to stain or repaint them to look store-bought, using small foam rollers & good paint brushes.http://www.ehow.com/how_4554050_cabinets…
As to refacing, the secret here is that you find a good contractor that cares about the quality of the work (s)he provides. I have seen good refacing jobs & I have seen bad ones.
If you go the refacing route, I would ask for a list of customers that have had their refacings on for at least 5 years. Most refacings today are with self stick veneers & they don’t always stay stuck.
You could do your own refacing:http://www.ehow.com/how_4525112_reface-c…
With the cost of cabinets, quality ones are a sizable investment.
Good luck…
