Making a the Most out of a Small Kitchen

If you have a small kitchen, you understand the frustration of trying to fit everything that you need into a tiny space. You may watch cooking shows on television and drool over the wide countertops and spacious floor space. But with the right planning and a few clever tricks, your small kitchen can feel larger and more spacious than it really is.

1.Increase your work spaces

Kitchens are one of the only rooms in the house, save the garage, where you need to stand and get some work done. Work spaces like cutting boards and counter space can be prime real estate in a kitchen. There are a few different ways you can increase your workspace without losing standing space.

You can have additional cutting boards installed in your cabinets, if you have the room and the budget. Alternatively, you can invest in a large cutting board to cover half of the burners on your stove. When these burners aren’t in use, the cutting board makes an excellent prep space for cooking on the other burners. People vary rarely use all four burners at once anyway.

2.Solve storage problems

Storage is one of the most important issues that small kitchen owners face. There are so many appliances, dishes and cooking tools that need to be placed into a kitchen that it seems like there is never enough room. If you are remodeling your small kitchen, be sure to incorporate corner cabinets with Lazy Susans so you can make the most of your space and still be able to reach it all.

If you aren’t doing any extensive remodeling in your kitchen, there are still other organizational tools you can use to increase your space. First, consider what you can store outside of the kitchen area. You can use a cabinet in the hallway or in another room to store large appliances you seldom use, dishes that you only bring out for special occasions and other items you don’t need on a daily basis. This will free up your kitchen storage for items that you have to have on hand frequently.

3.Decorate to make the space look larger

Sometimes just a fresh coat of paint and a few decorating accents will make your space look twice as large. First, dark colors are a no-no for your small kitchen. Dark colors on the walls and the cabinets make your kitchen look small and cave-like. White and other light neutral colors are the best choices for making your space look larger. Consider adding a large mirror on one wall of your kitchen. The reflection will add more light into your space and it will also make the room look bigger.

If you have an eat-in kitchen, choose your dining set very carefully. Select a smaller sized table that will give you more room to walk around in the kitchen. You small table can also be pulled over to add extra prep space.

Whether you incorporate just one of these techniques or all of them, you’ll see an immediate impact on the space you have in your kitchen.

Betty’s Macaroni and Cheese Deluxe

In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make her Macaroni and Cheese Deluxe. This is one of several versions of Macaroni and Cheese that you will find in bettyskitchen. This version is especially tasty, with the sauce made of cottage cheese, sour cream, cheddar cheese, eggs, and seasonings. It is my son-in-law’s favorite of all of my Macaroni and Cheese recipes! Ingredients: 8-oz. package elbow macaroni, uncooked 2 cups cottage cheese (small curd) 8-oz. carton sour cream 1 egg, well beaten ½ to ¾ teaspoon salt (I used ¾ teaspoon salt in the video, and thought it would have been better with a little less.) dash of ground black pepper 2cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese cooking oil spray (for baking dish) paprika, optional (for topping) Cook 8-oz. macaroni, according to package instructions. (I added 1 teaspoon salt to the boiling water.) Drain macaroni when done. In the meantime, combine 2 cups cottage cheese, an 8-oz. carton sour cream, 1 well-beaten egg, ½ to ¾ teaspoon salt, a dash of black pepper, and 2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese in a large bowl. Add cooked and drained macaroni to cheese sauce and stir mixture until well-combined. Spoon macaroni mixture into a 9-inch by 12-inch by 2-inch baking dish, which has been sprayed with cooking oil spray. Sprinkle with paprika, if desired. Bake at 350 for 35 to 45 minutes, or until bubbly and beginning to brown. Serve immediately! Yum! I hope you enjoy this recipe! –Betty ?
