I hired a kitchen design company to do a total gut and remodel of my kitchen. The contract says that appliance installation is included. The appliance company dropped off the appliances in my garage. My kitchen contractor is claiming that only the “installation” of the appliances is included, not the physical movement of the appliances from outside the house to inside. Is this typical? I feel like I’m getting ripped off because I might have to spend extra money to get a mover.

Want Less Stress In The Kitchen? – Then Choose The Right Kitchen Design!

Kitchen sink experiments

Sometimes the best things take the longest to develop and with a good kitchen design it is no different. This is so because the kitchen is not only one of the most important functional rooms in the home but also because it serves the added purpose of adding tangible and aesthetic value to your home and any good kitchen design will be able to accomplish all these purposes.

Today kitchens are no less important than they were when they first became a focal point in the home; in fact, they are possibly more of a focal point and important today than they were in years past! Many families today live a very fast paced life and as such necessities and quality time often coincide so it’s no wonder why so many families meet for a quick breakfast or dinner in the kitchen. But a bad kitchen design can make this function difficult let alone any idea of luxury which includes being able to spend some time with your family or friends when cooking or having a meal.

A good kitchen design is a design that does not only allow more than one person to work comfortably at the same time, but it also allows easy and accessible storage as well as aesthetic appeal so that people would actually want to spend time in the room doing things that would otherwise be a drab and a chore.

A good kitchen design takes into account the Read the rest of this entry

Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook – Part 22

pronto! my tiny kitchen

I grew up on a farm. Many days were spent feeding our family and the farm help. Mom used to cook in large quantities. If we were not cooking regular meals, we were canning produce or blanching items for the freezer. It was a must to clean as you cooked otherwise the kitchen was never clean.

Here are some easy steps to clean as you cook. These steps work well if you are working alone in the kitchen or if two people are working together. One person can cook and the other can clean.

1. If you have a double sink, fill one side with warm soapy water ready for washing dishes. Keep the other side of the sink empty for cleaning vegetables and rinsing washed dishes, etc. For a single sink, use a plastic dishpan. You should still have enough room to rinse dishes or work on vegetables. Make sure the dish drainer is empty. If you have a dishwasher, make sure it is ready to be loaded for a new cycle of washing dishes.

2. The longer food is allowed to sit on dishes and pots and pans, the more work it is to clean them. Therefore, when you finish with an item, put it in the soapy water. When you have a break from cooking, like waiting for water to boil, etc., wash the dishes in the sink, rinse them, and put them in the dish drainer or the dishwasher depending on Read the rest of this entry

Keeping your kitchen clean – Part 9

Kitchen Utensils

Keeping your kitchen clean can seem a near impossible tasks when every time you use something it seems to make a mess of sorts. When you have children keeping the kitchen clean is even more difficult especially if the children have a tendency to use the kitchen door for access to the outside world. Now never mind the dishes, counter tops and appliances to be kept clean, you have added the occurrence of tiny, muddy little footprints on a regular basis. What ever are you going to do about keeping your kitchen clean now that you don’t have mama there to fall back on?

There is a solution to keeping your kitchen clean that doesn’t have to involve banning everyone from it. When you cook the biggest messes are normally on the stove and in the dishes that you end up having to wash. Do you have a dishwasher that has a decent size load capacity? Load it immediately after you use something that you won’t have a need for in the immediate future. Do you like me still have to do dishes by hand for lack of a dishwasher? While you are cooking or rather prior to it fix a sink of water so you can wash any mixing bowls and utensils as you use them so that you spend less time washing after the fact. Once everything is done and the dishes washed dry them and put them away before you do anything else to ensure that there is Read the rest of this entry

Thoughts on When to Update Your Kitchen

Thoughts on When to Update Your Kitchen

Many of us think about updating or remodeling parts of our homes from time to time.  There are many possibilities, including the kitchen, bathrooms, room or deck additions, etc.  A “new” kitchen is often at the top of the list since it is one of the busiest rooms in the home, and there are a number of appliances which over time might become outdated.  Here are several suggestions about formalizing the decision to update or remodel the kitchen.

One starting point might be the status of lifestyle issues.  Have career issues, children’s’ or parents’ issues, decisions on where to live, etc., stabilized so that you are likely to remain in the home for another 5 – 10 years?  If so, updating or remodeling could be a serious consideration.

The comparative importance of the kitchen in the family’s current needs will help you decide how to proceed.  If everyone is very busy and meals are more of a requirement than an activity, and the family would love to have a new entertainment room, then the new kitchen might wait a few years.  If, however, the kids and neighbors hang out in your kitchen a lot of the time, kitchen changes could move to the top of the list.

If a move to a new house is around the corner, it might be very valuable to update the kitchen to make the house more desirable for a potential buyer.  There are considerations as to the percentage of a room Read the rest of this entry
