Remodeling a kitchen – how long did it take, how much did it cost?

My husband and I want to remodel our kitchen and would like to plan for the time and costs. How long did your kitchen remodel take and were there unexpected expenses you hadn’t counted for that came up? Were you happy with the outcome of the kitchen based on what you spent?

It took 3 months….. we did it ourselves and it cost 27,000$ Canadian….

Unexpected expenses: wiring that was no longer any good, having to buy more tiles, redoing the floor base to make it smooth for the new tiles (because pulling up the old ones ruined the floor underneath) and having to make a new countertop instead of just being able to relaminate the old one (the wood underneath the old laminate was rotting).

Yes… very happy with the outcome! We have just sold the house… paid it 133 500.00$ just over 5 years ago…. just sold it for 279 500.00$ … I’d say that definitely covers the cost of the kitchen renovation!

Question by Karen N: How much does it cost to remodel my small kitchen?
I live in Portland, Oregon & my house was buit in the 50s so my kitchen is pretty small. I’d like to remodel it so I can save some space and make it look more modern. I want to put in new cabinets & new countertops. I’m not too picky about getting brand names stuff. Does anyone know on average how much the whole thing would cost, part & labor? Would it be better if I hire an interior designer or just a carpenter? Or would it be cheaper to just go to like Home Depot, Costco..etc and get them to do it? Any tips on how I could save the most money would be great. I’m clueless when it comes to decorating. Thanks in advance.

We remodeled our kitchen a couple of years ago (we live in Texas). The room is about 12 feet by 12 feet. We stripped everything out to the walls, including flooring. The only thing we didn’t replace were the appliances. We spent about $ 2,000. My husband built the cabinets so that saved quiet a bit. I know that Home Depot has pre-built cabinets that may work for you and save you some money. They also have people there that can help you design your space. good luck!

Is Refacing Kitchen Cabinets More Cost Effective Than Just Replacing Everything???

Hello,
Just bought a 2 family house that appears to have been owned by an eccentric yet crafty man. The unit I am moving into has an “interesting” kitchen with 3 different types of cabinets (Floor cabinets/wall cabinets/island) in white and a dark and light wood finish. Its atrocious.
I went to Home Depot last night and after 30 minutes got nothing but a phone number to call since refacing is a new service for them. All I wanted to know is how much does refacing really save? If its only like 20% cheaper then I’d rather replace everything. If its half as much or something that much better then I’d rather just reface.
My parents resurfaced their cabinets in 1996 and they are still going strong so I have no problem with resurfacing.
The kitchen is not large…. I believe its less than 12 cabinets combined.. Any advice you have is super.

We have a standard 9X10 L-shaped kitchen. It’s not small but it’s not conducive to entertaining as most of our parties end up being kitchen parties. We cannot tear down any interior walls because of the design of the house and other connecting rooms. I was thinking of enlarging the square footage by adding outwards.
I understand additions cost a lot, but what is the ballpark figure? I am looking to extend only one wall towards the backyard. It has 4 windows. Vinyl siding. I’m in the Southeast.

We just bought a new home, and the cabinets look dirty and dated. The structure is sound and drawers move beautifully. I want to update the look by either
1) buying new cabinets from Ikea (which was rated #4 by Consumer Reports)–any ideas about that?
2) Refacing the cabinets
Which one will cost less?
I do plan on buying special cabinets (1 or 2) to add to the existing ones to maximize storage.
Please help because I’m a first-time homeowner, and don’t have a clue about this. I’ve spent 4 weeks just researching, and now my mimd is all muddled.
