Get the kitchen you want and save money when you oversee the job yourself.

As a custom cabinet designer/fabricator, at Cabinets Etc. of Huntington Beach California, I have personally seen many applications, designs and styles coming together to make a homeowners dream kitchen come true.

Working with a reputable general contractor can make the project a whole lot easier, if you can afford the costs that go along with having someone oversee the work being done. The generals I work with charge a substantial fee for there services.

For those of you, or should I say to most of you who would like to save that money or spend it on upgrades, then the answer is finding the right contractors for your job. Most homeowners have neighbors and friends who have been through the kitchen remodel phase and could get some good references from them. If your friends used a general contractor, you can still get the references from the sub-contractors that worked on there kitchen.

You will probably need the following services to complete your project: drywall, paint, flooring, cabinets, counter top, electrical and plumbing. There is one important thing you must do when choosing your contractors. Go online to the Contractors State License Board at www.cslb.ca.gov or google it for your state. There you can check the status of a license or see if there has been any complaints on the license. This is always good practice no matter how small or large the job is.

If you decide to buy prefabricated cabinets (which I don’t recommend), then be prepared to have some items show up with damage. I install these cabinets for a few contractors and I must say, 95% of these jobs are delayed while waiting for replacement cabinets to show up. This will hold up your project depending on which cabinets show up damaged. Prefabricated cabinets use a lot of fillers and don’t utilize all your space. Hire a custom cabinet maker you won’t regret it. After all you are going to do this once, do it knowing that all available space is taken advantage of.

Now, be prepared to be out of your kitchen for 8 to 12 weeks. The actual time frame will depend on the size of the job. Set up a make shift kitchen in your living room with your basic necessities: microwave, refrigerator, toaster and coffee maker and be sure to cover all entries to kitchen with tape and plastic. This will help in keeping out unwanted dust from entering other rooms of your home.

Now, do your homework. No one said this was going to be easy but rewarding, yes.
