Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook – Part 19

Sparkling Kitchens - Kitchen Designs of the 1940s and 1950s

The best tip for keeping your kitchen clean, when it is time to cook, is a trick I have used often….

go out for your meal.

My tip may sound frivolous or self centered but you can not keep your kitchen clean when you cook, no matter how many tips you try. Your kitchen will get used, dirty, and disorganized, if you cook and eat your meal.

You can also try prepared food in one dish to cut down on dishes. Keep dishes simple by not using more than one or two pots and pans to cook your meal. Clean up as you go so that after dinner you only need to put away the plates from the table. Lastly, get all people eating involved in cleaning to break up the burden of cleaning and cut down on the time spent doing this unavoidable chore.

My choice, however, is still to go out. With a family of five, once in a while, it is really nice not to spend an hour cooking and another cleaning afterwards.

How to clean up a kitchen after cooking – Part 3

Kitchen Remodel

One essential element in cleaning the kitchen after cooking is to make sure that your kitchen is well organized and free of any unnecessary clutter. The last thing anyone wants to do after cooking is to wipe down a bunch of greasy knick knacks.

By keeping items to a minimum it is easy to wipe down the counters, cupboards and appliances. I find that the disinfecting wipes are invaluable for this job. Cleaning as you go is another important factor in cleaning the kitchen after cooking.

If you clean any pots, pans, dishes & counters as you go you will face a much easier job when finished cooking. This makes it more manageable and less overwhelming; who wants to clean 4 pans and a sink full of dishes after slaving over a meal? And if you train everyone to put their dishes in the dishwasher after they are through eating it makes the task even easier.

Spot clean the floor, wipe out the sink, put all hand washed dishes away after drying and you are finished. And the kitchen is clean for the next scrumptious meal to be prepared!

Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook – Part 15

No armário da minha cozinha - in my kitchen cupboard

The art of minimality can be used to keep any space clean, including your kitchen.

Obviously it is good practice to clean while you cook so that you don’t give up later once you look at the pile of dishes that have amassed. Many of us are not good at doing that however, and we need a bit of a push.

For those of us who are willing to take the minimality challenge in order to keep the place clean, the secret is to own less dishes and utensils.

If you only have one fork, one bowl, one plate, etc. then you will be forced to wash those items as you use them to cook. Of course you need different sizes and perhaps more than one thing, but knowing that you don’t have the luxury of pulling another one off the shelf will help you keep things in order. Cleaning is much more of a psychological effort than it is physical one.

Also, if you keep the sink prepared for washing (wash cloth etc.) then it will be much easier to grab a cloth and wipe things down or quickly wash a dish.

On the other hand, cooking doesn’t have to be environmentally friendly. Keeping your kitchen clean might mean making the environment dirty. If you can use disposable items, then you can just throw things away as you cook.

So the trick to keeping your kitchen clean is not by doing more, but by doing less-less Read the rest of this entry

Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook – Part 11

shelagh in the kitchen

The best way to keep your kitchen clean when you cook is to make sure everything is in correct order before beginning a new task such as cooking. For me I have to make sure all my dishes are cleaned, the sink is cleared up, the floors is swept and mopped and stove, and fridge and counter tops are all rid of grease, grime and other things. My family in particular my brother in law is the person responsible for how I clean, manage and organize myself in the household. I cannot enter a kitchen where things are out of place, the best approach is to make sure everything is in structured order that way your mind is clear and you feel good about preparing the food you’re about to serve yourself and others.

Therefore, my advice is to clear the clutter from the table, counters and sink that way your food will be prepared in a clean environment and the food would be a lot more enjoyable when you eat. I also suggest you drape a wet rag over your shoulder, this way any spills will be dealt with swiftly without leaving a stubborn stain later to clean. I do this each time I step into my kitchen I may also add make sure your wet garbage and other recyclables is properly compartmentalized before you begin cooking. I have everything prepared on my counter so I do not have to reach to get things or step away Read the rest of this entry

Useful Tips About Choosing Kitchen Sinks

Ugly kitchen painted pink

The selection of your kitchen sink will depend on:

- the size of the cabinet underneath your sink

- the size of your countertop (whether it has backsplash or not)

- the material of your countertop

- the way you will use your sink

- your preferences

- how much you can afford

Characteristics of kitchen sinks

According to the number of basins, kitchen sinks may be:

1. Single-basin: this is a smaller sink. If you have a kitchen island, you might like to mount a single-basin sink in it, auxiliary to your main sink. If you have a dishwasher, you can rinse the dishes in this sink before putting them in the appliance.

If its basin is fairly large and deep (10 or 12 inches (25-30 cm) in depth) this sink may be more comfortable for you to wash large utensils in than a standard sink with two identical basins.

2. Double-basin: a sink of standard 33 inches (84 cm) length to 22 inches (56 cm) width that fits perfectly to the standard sink cabinet – 36 inches (91 cm) length to 24 inches (61 cm) width.

Its basins are most often identical. It’s a good selection for a sink if you wash your dishes manually; you wash them in one of the basins and rinse them in the other one.

3. Triple-basin: this kitchen sink is bigger. You can use one of the basins to wash the dishes and the Read the rest of this entry
