White distilled vinegar is a great green way to keep the kitchen sparkling clean. Because of it’s high acidity level it is effective in killing most mold, bacteria and germs. It is a way to avoid harsh chemicals and can use as a base in many different ways. It is a fairly inexpensive method of cleaning as well.

~Creamy Scouring Cleanser

This creamy scoring cleanser can help with all sorts of spills and splatters. Take 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 tablespoon of liquid dish detergent and then just enough white distilled vinegar to make the texture smooth and creamy.

~The Stove

Vinegar is a great way to dissolve grease and spills in the oven. Put the white distilled vinegar in a spray bottle and saturate the door, walls and floor of the oven. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes and wipe out the grease and grime.

~The Microwave

This is a great little trick for all those microwave splatters. Put 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar in a microwave safe bowl. Bring it to a rolling bowl and then allow it it sit for five minutes. Baked on splatters should be easy to wipe clean and all the odors will be gone.

Clean up as you go along. The best way to keep the kitchen clean when you cook is to maximize your time.

UNLOAD THE DISHWASHER FIRST

Start your cooking process by cleaning up a little bit. Unload the dishwasher and load into it any dishes on the counter, in the sink, next to the TV, etc. Then handwash anything you will need to use for your recipe.

ORGANIZE YOUR STEPS IN YOUR HEAD

Know what dishes you will use for each part of your recipe and get them ready. Make sure your counters and cutting board are clean and begin your preparation by going over each part of your recipe and timing each step so that most steps in your preparation are complete at the same time.

MAXIMIZE YOUR TIME

If you find you are standing around waiting for one step in the process to be complete, use that time to clean up a little bit. Rinse out any dirty dishes and load them in the now empty dishwasher. Run a sink full of suds and soak anything that is particularly dirty for later ease in cleaning. Keep your counters clean as you go along. Finally, handwash any dishes that will be required later on in the process. The more you can keep clean, the less you have to clean when you are finished.

The kitchen is usually the busiest place in our homes. It’s where we cook, where almost everyone eats and spills food. Thus, a lot of dirt and germs are attracted. Don’t be surprised to find cockroaches and flies. The main things in cleaning the kitchen are:

Doing the dishes

Cleaning the counter tops and food preparing areas

Cleaning the sink

Cleaning the oven (if you have one that is)

Clean the refrigerator

Cleaning the small appliances

Cleaning the stove where you cook

How to Do the Dishes

You might feel lazy to do the dishes after eating but you should do them immediately for these 2 reasons:

Hygiene: pests, germs and bacteria will be attracted to dishes with bits of food left on them.

Time and effort: it is much easier to wash just used dishes than dishes where the food and grease have dried up. You’d need more effort to scrub them off.

Tips for Using a Dishwasher

Confirm that your dishes are dishwasher safe: Crystal, china, silver, cookware, and fine wood typically can’t go in the dishwasher. Check the manufacturer’s instructions-often printed on the bottom of the dish-before putting any of these materials in the dishwasher.

Rinse dishes: Rinse the dishes before putting in the dishwasher as it can’t remove dried caked on food.

How to reduce hazardous products in your kitchen – Part 5

Before I write any article I like to be quite sure I understand the title. Firstly I would not be content merely to reduce hazardous products I would want remove every hazardous product from the kitchen. Secondly I would want to know what defines a product as hazardous. Thirdly I would want to know at what age a product is considered hazardous to a person.

The kitchen is a minefield of objects and chemicals all of which can be considered hazardous depending on your viewpoint. If you have a toaster that consistently blows a fuse then that is hazardous. If you have dishwasher powder, that may not be considered hazardous if stored safely. However if the powder is within easy reach of a small child and stored in an ice cream container under the sink then I would consider that to be extremely hazardous to the child’s safety. The point is that something may be considered to be safe to a particular person but extremely hazardous to some one else depending on age and knowledge .

Let’s take my first point. I would want to remove every hazardous product in my kitchen not merely reduce them. Obviously if my toaster was faulty that would be the first thing to go along with any electrical appliance that had worn cords or was cause for concern. Why a clean kitchen is necessary to safe food preparation – Part 13

The last thing that you want to do is to have a dirty surface that you are working off of to prepare your food. There are so many things in the kitchen that you can get sick from you never can be too careful. Here are some suggestions on how to keep your kitchen clean and keep all the germs away.

My theory is that you can never clean your kitchen enough. I feel like I am always wiping down the countertops. Especially if you have just set some uncooked meat down, you have to do even more than just wiping down. I recommend always having your favorite sanitizer handy and use it frequently.

You can get really sick from food poisoning and salmonella poisoning. That is why I recommend a good sanitizer. This will help prevent these. Never leave dirty dishes around. If you are in a hurry I would at least rinse them, or put them in the dishwasher and have it set for a quick rinse. You never want to leave food on a plate or it will create more germs, plus it is harder to clean later.

Use these recommendations and you will have a much healthier kitchen with less germs!

Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook – Part 9

I love to cook; simply adore it. If I could cook all day and all night long, I’d be in heaven. Unfortunately a side effect of cooking is the clean up… which I absolutely hate, especially since I cook from scratch quite a bit! Nothing taints a good meal more than knowing that an hour of tidying up the kitchen will be happening during digestion.

Because of this love/hate relationship with my kitchen, which I hear is very common, I came upon a few tips to keep the kitchen cleaner while cooking rather than letting it all build up and having to tackle it at the end of a nice meal when you should be sitting and sipping a relaxing cup of tea or a rich mug of coffee.

Tip 1: Pull all the ingredients and prep utensils (bowls, wooden spoons, measuring cups, ect.) for your meal out of the fridge and cupboards and put them in one spot. This way, you’ll have everything on hand, in one place, and not scattered throughout the kitchen.

Tip 2: When you are finished with an ingredient, immediately put it back where it belongs. For example, when you’re done measuring your flour and putting it into your mixing bowl, put the bag of flour back in the pantry or cupboard immediately. This takes care of clutter along the way.
