I have plastic kitchen cabinet drawers that are stained with a dark brown substance (appears to be wood stain). I’ve tried general household and kitchen cleaners. Can you suggest something that might work?

Keeping your kitchen clean – Part 20

Kitchen and Living Roomg

Responsibility and pride are two main factors to keeping a clean kitchen. With those two traits, you are sure to hum through every meal. Responsibility is the act of cleaning up after the meals and pride is what you feel when you don’t have to feel embarrassed about having people over for supper. But in order to keep a clean kitchen, you should first start with a clean kitchen. Here is how to deep clean a kitchen:

When cleaning any room, you should start at the top because dirt falls. Knock down all the cobwebs and take down your light shades and wash them in soapy water. Knock any bugs from the light fixtures.

Empty out all the cabinets, both upper and lower, and wash the insides with an all-purpose cleaner. Don’t forget any drawers. This is the time to reline the shelves if needed. Before putting things back in the cabinets, think about whether you had them filled in a good, workable order. Maybe it’s time to do some rearranging or weeding out. Refill the shelves.

Scrub the outside of the upper cabinets with an all-purpose cleaner. Floor stripper also works well for this job, to remove all build-up, and won’t hurt the cabinets. If your handles are tarnished, you might consider taking them off the doors and soak them in water, to be cleaned.

Next in height comes the hood fan. Here is where the real work begins. You need to pull the stove out of its cranny. Be careful not to Read the rest of this entry

Organize your kitchen by clearing the clutter – Part 30

kitchen canisters

Clutter can be the downfall of any well-run house. Not only is it overwhelming to the mind, but clutter can give the impression of “dirty” to even the cleanest home. It is also a big time-killer. In the United States, each person loses approximately untold hours simply trying to find things. I’ve found a somewhat complex way of organizing my house. I will not share that lengthy process here today. I’m simply going to share a few tips for removing clutter from a kitchen.

1. Knick-knacks are great! But they’re only great in moderation. If you find that they collect dust faster than you can clean them; or that you have no room on your counters for the completion of normal kitchen tasks, then they need to go. I suggest a garage sale or joining your local Free-Cycle group as a way of sharing you wealth and removing clutter from your kitchen.

2. Plants are great! However if the vines from your spider plant are dropping their sprouts and dirt all over the counters or you can’t see through the window, trim them up or move some to another part of the house.

3. Utensils are great (and necessary)! One container sitting next to the cooking area is perfect. Or perhaps hang your utensils above your stove. Utensils thrown together in various drawers or even one over-crowded drawer is a time-waster.

4. Streamline, streamline, streamline! I can’t stress this enough. As a former waitress, cook and currently the owner of a Read the rest of this entry

Renovate Your Kitchen Economically

Dahlias on my kitchen dresser

Perhaps it is the primal spirit in us, bringing out the homing instinct, but it seems that everyone likes the idea of having a newly renovated kitchen! Experts tell us that it need not cost a lot of money and that it will likely return at least three quarters of it back to you when you sell the home.

While many home-owners can push the kitchen renovating bill up and over the $40,000 mark, it is possible to spend half that. According to Money Magazine, the average kitchen can be renovated for less than $20,000.

This includes new counter tops, a new island, a fitted pantry, new lighting, the latest appliances and refurbished cabinets. Many home-owners do not realize that brand new cabinet doors are fairly inexpensive and almost free of labor costs.

Another option is to have your cabinet doors “re-faced”. This entails the removal of your cabinet doors and drawers, a wood veneer is then applied and they are returned to your kitchen.

If spending this $20,000 will, in fact, add an extra $15,000 to the value of your home, then what’s holding you back? To bring your kitchen up to date, Money Magazine suggests that a kitchen island and a pantry are the latest ‘must-haves’ for kitchens.

If you do not have an island, you may wish to consider taking out a wall to make room for one. Perhaps this could be where you would build in a pantry if you do not have a closet that Read the rest of this entry

Small Kitchen Remodeling

kitchen, during the day / 01

Everybody wants to be a part of it… New York, New York. Being the major global city that it is, NYC has long since been accommodating the urban sprawl. The high costs of acquiring a house and lot brought forth the rise in smaller living units like condos and apartments. Staying in such, you would have to learn to live with limited space but it doesn’t mean that you cannot make a home out of it. Of course you can, and you can start with the most frequented area by remodeling your small kitchen.

Small kitchen remodeling entails many things to consider. Aside from creating a more comfortable and better-looking area out if it, one of the other challenge is maximizing its functionality. Thinking of everything there is to do like selection of the right appliances, design and accessories may seem overwhelming. To ease the frustration of putting this task into action, here are several ideas to help you plan your small kitchen remodeling project:

  • Ease in moving around is an important factor to incorporate in the design of your small kitchen remodeling plan. The ‘work triangle’ is a classic layout that the makes use of the three most utilized features in a kitchen: the refrigerator, sink and stove. This arrangement has long-since proved to help avoid people getting in each other’s way, especially in the process of meal preparation. Other than this layout, another design technique that you can follow is to create more than one Read the rest of this entry

1966 harvest gold kitchen - mixing metal and wood

For the most significant part of a house, one could think of no room other than the kitchen. This is one room which cannot be easily neglected when we talk about home decoration or organizing. Before food comes to mind, we would certainly like to have  a clean place with well organized cabinets,  kitchen storage accessories, cooking tools and equipments in order to have the best meal cooked and served. The culture of  cooking and decorating a kitchen varies from place to place; so do the choices for  a perfect ambience which could make the kitchen more attractive.

A gracefully built-up kitchen can definitely create a positive effect on cooking and especially appeal to those who enjoy having a complete familial atmosphere at home. A roomy kitchen, as most of us would desire, is suitable to install different cooking countertop gadgets, cookware and bakeware, linens, racks, stands, carts, food processors, choppers, dish drainers, jar openers, ovens, and many other appliances which have now made life much more easier than the old times. One doesn’t have to actually wait for long hours to have food, due to these newly designed cooking tools which include bread machines, pressure cookers, blenders, mixers, choppers, ice-cream makers, etc. In order to accommodate all of this stuff, the kitchen needs to have intuitively designed cabinets, drawers, utensil organizers, towel holders, and other types of storage solutions. Tips for keeping your kitchen clean when you cook

gollum's kitchen

A kitchen is both one of the dirtiest areas of the house and one of the two areas, along with the bathroom, which we must keep clean for our health’s sake. Here are some of the tips to help keep the kitchen clean during the preparation of food.

A kitchen is for food preparation. Try to keep the kids and everyone other than cook out of the kitchen, especially at cooking time, but at other times also. If possible, arrange traffic patterns around the kitchen not through it. The kitchen floor is hard to keep clean when the only thing you do in the room is cook. Letting the kids use it to change from boots to shoes adds mud to the equation.

A kitchen table is for eating. It is not a good place for homework and bill paying. For one thing, homework and bills will always get left (and lost) in the kitchen area. Or soiled. Or both. Keep the kitchen empty except for cooking.

Now for the arrangement of the kitchen. Keep track of the utensil you use most and where you use them. Stove utensil you use all the time should be near the stove or hung near them, perhaps on peg board or from a utensil rack from the ceiling. Utensils used rarely can be stored in drawers.

In general, keep things you use everyday right at hand. Need to pack lunch for the spouse or the kids? Keep baggies, twisties, marker and paper lunch bags in the Read the rest of this entry

Kitchen Cabinet Secret Exposed!

My Vintage Kitchen Stove (chambers c model) when we first built, we've upgraded the counters since.

As a contractor one is constantly looking for a great deal and a way to save a few dollars. If it means a little more work, then that is no problem because your work is part of your own costs and you don’t have to charge your self for time. So when I stumbled upon kitchen cabinets that could be bought and assembled, I realized I could save money. It is simple; I am not paying someone else to assemble the kitchen cabinets.

I was in one of those big box home supply centers and was going to buy my kitchen cabinets the usual way. I already had them loaded onto one of those flat carts when I casually complained to another customer that there has got to be a better way than hauling all these pre-assembled kitchen cabinets around. The other customer said buy them online. Of course I thought it was a joke. Then I was told that the kitchen cabinets get shipped to you, you avoid any store hassles, and the best part is that the cost was 40% less than the big box home center prices. Part of the reason these kitchen cabinets cost less is because they are considered RTA cabinets which stands for ready to assemble cabinets.

So I decided to do a search and see what I could find online. I was floored! There are many choices out there and Read the rest of this entry

Unique storage tips for the kitchen

Unique Storage Tips for the Kitchen

We have all done it, had a kitchen cupboard that doesn’t close and when the dishes from the sink finally make their way to the place of storage the cupboard is full and the kitchen starts to become a storage nightmare. One of the biggest problems that we do is over purchasing, weather its food plates, dishes or cups we all have our own storage mistakes. One way to help stop this problem is not to over purchase, ok bulk buying may be cheaper in the mean time but can you stand having to have a kitchen that has NO space or proper organisation?

Perhaps just stock up on the basics, such as sugar, milk, salt, pepper, and the staple things in your diet to avoid a crammed kitchen storage space. Another problem is the drawers, don’t you just hate it in a kitchen when you open the drawers and they are just an array of mess and clutter! One thing to help you with issue is by having a rule in the home that if it’s not for the kitchen then don’t put it there. I am not sure about your kitchen but in ours I have a nightmare draw that has paper, pens, keys, pieces of crap that really don’t need to be there and could probably be in the bin.

If this simple rule is followed then the kitchen shouldn’t end up packed full of rubbish that’s not useful. Another Read the rest of this entry
