Pauline's kitchen before

With the advent of larger kitchens in today’s modern home, the demand for more lighting options, such as under cabinet kitchen lighting, has been created. Kitchen Design 101

Blythe Dollhouse - pink kitchen

“When one has finished building one’s house, one suddenly realizes that in the process one has learned something that one really needed to know in the worst way – before one began.”

Friedrich Nietzsche

Who was it that said “Follow the money”? Well, who said it doesn’t matter – this is a kitchen so our mantra to efficiently design our kitchen is to “Follow the Food!”

The basic underlying purpose of a kitchen is to prepare food. For an efficient well designed kitchen anything else is subservient to that. To achieve a properly functioning kitchen the best designers study the efficient flow of food preparation and can use this same design process to create your own efficient kitchen. To have the most efficient kitchen for your meal preparation it is best to not only “follow the food”, but follow your food. Each kitchen prepares different meals so your properly designed kitchen will be set up with you or your chef in mind.

Your kitchen will have a series of paths the food follows during the preparation process. Placing the various areas of the kitchen in proper relationship to one another so the food path flows easily will enhance your kitchen’s efficiency. When your kitchen is properly designed, you can easily prepare the largest meal served over the course of a year which is frequently a holiday meal. Also, and more importantly for the ease of your daily Read the rest of this entry

Is a Kitchen Island the Solution?

KITCHEN SHOP

In the earlier days, kitchens were mostly relegated to the women in the house and was dedicatedly used for food preparation and storage. Kitchens have now become an activity area and as the roles of men and women converge and everyone starts taking part in all activities, kitchens are becoming more multifunctinals and spacious.

The person who cooks wants to be constantly in touch with the activities that happen in the living or dining room and others now are able to to spend more time in the kitchen since new designs favor opened layouts. Kitchen are consequently becoming a hub of a variety of activities.

For the above reasons, people give good thought to the kitchen design and kitchen furniture during remodel process or purchase of a home. Along with the position and accessibility of the kitchen, a lot of thought is given to kitchen furniture and cabinets too. Modular cabinets are available these days in standard sizes so that most individuals can design or re-design a kitchen easily. Even after all the design considerations and thought processes, once people start moving and living in the house, the kitchen starts getting filled with furniture, groceries, dishes, appliances, cutlery items. A need for more storage and work space quickly becomes apparent.

The best solution in these cases is to look for kitchen islands. In the simplest case, a kitchen island is a centrally located countertop with storage spaces which can be used as a Read the rest of this entry

Why a clean kitchen is necessary to safe food preparation – Part 10

Green Lattice Kitchen

This may sound strange for some people but according to me its a fact – ‘a clean kitchen is not only necessary to safe food preparation’ but also its one of the ways which can lead you to success.

Let me explain – If you make your food in a clean kitchen it will be quicker and a lot more hygienic than if you make it in an untidy one. A hygienic food will improve your health which will, in turn lead you to work better and then will finally lead you to success.

Here are some of the ways by which you can keep your kitchen clean no matter what the circumstances.

1. Never leave the dirty dishes in the sink.

2. Washing one by one as they come is better than Read the rest of this entry

Why a clean kitchen is necessary to safe food preparation – Part 6

My kitchen

A clean kitchen means clean food preparation. Clean food preparation means there are no surprise additives to that special recipe you wish to prepare to impress the new inlaws! Not a good look, if your exotic Italian dish has been laced with vegemite breadcrumbs from the morning’s breakfast! Or worse, last night’s chicken smells in the breadboard somehow worked their way into those adorable Italian mini beef rissoles you were planning for an entre! To call them the latest “chicken con carne” may sound a little dubious, at best!

A clean kitchen means deterring the arrival of surprise, uninvited guests. Not even Italian cockroaches are welcome!

A clean kitchen means clean aromas. There is nothing worse than the stale smell of leftovers.

A clean kitchen means clean utensils and dishes, clean cooktops AND floors free of microbes. It is important to use a food friendly cleanser to clean the kitchen! To use natural products as cleansers, such as lemons, oranges or vinegar, ensures there are no dangers from the cleansers themselves!

A clean kitchen enhances safe food preparation. Safe food preparation means the minimal chance of food poisoning and a hasty trip to the hospital. Food poisoning is debilitating, cramping at best and life threatening at worst!

But above all, a clean kitchen is inviting, to you AND your guests! It invites the tastebuds to taste SAFE food!

Cooking Up Solutions for Your Kitchen Clutter

close up of kitchen back wall

If your family is like most, the kitchen is the heart of the home. This is truly evident in home construction and renovation over the past 10 years which fashion kitchens that open up to eating areas and family rooms. Yet with all of its prominence in the family, it is usually one of the most disorganized rooms of the home. The constant stream of traffic and the home management that takes place here only adds to the chaos. So what can you do?

First start with a plan (this is the underlying theme of all of my articles – so now you know the secret to productive organizing!) When you think about it the kitchen generally has four to five zones: food preparation, cooking, cleaning, food storage and household management.

Food preparation takes place on a countertop and/or an island, so that will be the best place to store knives, measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls and any appliances related to preparing a meal. For cooking you will need utensils, pots and pans, baking dishes, and toaster. This zone should definitely be next to the stove and if you are lucky your microwave will be conveniently housed above. Cleaning of course will be located under the sink and next to the dishwasher. Here you will store all your cleaners and sponges. If you have little ones around the house, a child safety lock on this cabinet is a MUST! And finally food storage, located near the fridge, will need room not Read the rest of this entry

Why a clean kitchen is necessary to safe food preparation

Raimist Residence -- kitchen

I am not an expert on food or kitchen but I am a mother of a toddler who loves her way into the kitchen all the time and that pretty much makes it my business to keep the kitchen clean, germ free and safe. There are two aspects of kitchen cleaning, first to keep it clean enough to cook and second, handling the cooked food in a way that the kitchen continues to remain clean.

Grains, cereals, vegetables, fruits, water, milk, curd, lentils, tea, coffee, sugar, utensils, dish cleaning liquids, paper towels all this and more are stocked up in the kitchen. We use several of the above items from time to time for cooking and eating so it is not only necessary but crucial to the health of the whole family that the kitchen is clean. These essentials of the kitchen, if not stored, used and preserved properly, act as a breeding ground for germs and bacteria and the result can be disastrous. Wiping the kitchen clean everyday after meals not only eliminates existing dirt and germs but also gives us a clean platform for cooking the next meal. All necessary material to cook is brought from outside the house from stores and markets. Changing hundreds of hands, they finally find their place in our kitchen. If not cleaned, the kitchen would surely be a place to cook but the quality of food is bound to suffer. The dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, microwave, sink are all carriers of germs Read the rest of this entry

Introduction to Kitchen Design and Remodeling

Kitchen - New Cupcake Goodies

Introduction To Kitchen Design

Once upon a time the kitchen was a place that was used only for food preparation, storage and clean-up. Today it has become an important room of the house where not only cooking takes place, but is a hub of activity where you can entertain guests. This is why the kitchen design is very important where you have to keep both appeal and convenience when you are planning your kitchen remodeling.

One of the latest designs in kitchen remodeling lies in opening the kitchen into an adjacent space. This means that a “great room” is designed, where a kitchen is combined with a family or living room. Of course, this is accomplished by removing the wall in between the two rooms.

By opening your kitchen into another room, you make both the kitchen and the other room look more spacious. Moreover, you can easily show off the latest kitchen cabinetry, appliances and cabinetry that you use in your kitchen with an open kitchen. Opening up the kitchen also reduces your kitchen remodeling costs, where you may only have to bear the expenses of extra cabinetry.

When designing your kitchen, remember that it is hub of household activity; so make sure that it is well lit and has open places. The size and design of the kitchen should basically conform to the lifestyle of your family and how you use your kitchen for cooking, eating and entertaining.

As the kitchen fits Read the rest of this entry
