Five Things To Consider When Designing Your Dream Kitchen

kitchen in progress

Are you planning on purchasing new kitchen cabinets? Whether for a newly constructed home or for a remodeling project, consider one important factor, your kitchen is the heart of your home! It is not just a place to dine; it is also the main gathering place for family and friends and a place for entertaining. This is particularly true with today’s popular open floor plans and great room designs. Because your kitchen plays such an important part of your home there are a few things to consider in your planning process.

1) Kind in mind future buyers

Even if you are currently building your dream home, it is possible that someday you will have a need to sell your home. Or, if you are remodeling your existing home to make it more comfortable for you and your family, you may still find the need to sell it someday. Because of this, even if you aren’t ready to sell your home today you should always ponder what potential buyers would think of your kitchen cabinet selection and layout because opinions of your kitchen can drastically either increase or decrease your selling price. A practical kitchen layout is typically everyone’s goal, but cabinet styles and finishes are more of a personal choice. Are you attracted to traditional styles or more modern styles? Do you like kitchen cabinets with distinct wood grain or ones with nearly no grain? Whichever you personally prefer always keep future buyers in mind as it can Read the rest of this entry

Creating an Ergonomic Kitchen

Kitchen Still Life

The kitchen as we all know is becoming the most used room in most homes. It is not only used for cooking and eating; it is also used for social gatherings. Because of this, kitchen planning regarding such aspects as ergonomics and optimized work flows (distance, time) need to be taken into consideration when coming up with any kitchen design.

The ergonomic kitchen is a kitchen design that should be planned to suit you. What is important to the practical use of your new kitchen are specific heights, depths, widths & clearances that need to be observed. The right kitchen design should be one that creates a working environment that takes into account the exact movements of the person using the kitchen. This can include giving careful consideration to working heights for preparation, cooking and cleaning.

So what just what is an ergonomic kitchen design? Kitchens have made a comeback from being a small cluttered room at the back of the house to playing a very important part in the most social or activities of the house.

The well thought out and designed kitchen should be one that is designed around the needs of those who live in the home and the way they use the kitchen. The design should fit to your exact movements. This includes customized working heights for preparation, cooking and clean-up. The ergonomic kitchen should also take into careful though just what your present and future Read the rest of this entry

Satisfying a New Year’s Kitchen Craving With New Kitchen Cabinets

Red, White, and Blue Kitchen Design

A brand new year signals the desire for change. What are you hoping to alter in 2009? If your list includes an updated kitchen, there’s no time like the present to effect that change. And if a kitchen makeover tops your New Year cravings, the most important element you should be looking at is your kitchen cabinets. Why? Because kitchen cabinets are the focal point of the room. And because they take up the bulk of visible space, kitchen cabinets set the overall tone in your kitchen.

So when redoing your kitchen in 2009, the key questions you should be asking yourself are these:

1. Will I be happy with my new kitchen cabinets for years to come? No bones about it, kitchen cabinets are a major investment. But the money you spend on them can be well worth it, if you know they’re going to last you for decades to come. If, however, you’re going to grow tired of your kitchen cabinets within a few years, the return on investment isn’t going to be all that great. That’s because you’ll be shelling out even more cash to redo them to fit your current whims.

The best kitchen cabinet advice then is to select a kitchen cabinet manufacturer that has offered quality, timeless cabinetry designs for years. Choose a kitchen cabinet manufacturer that has developed a longstanding reputation for helping consumers create the kitchen of their dreams.

Secondarily, but no less important, you’ll want to seek Read the rest of this entry

Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets in Six Steps

our kitchen

Painting your kitchen cabinets is a great alternative to purchasing new cabinets. Not only can you save a lot of money but if done correctly the results are fantastic.

The easiest way to complete this project is not to paint the inside of the cabinets . The inside is only seen when the cabinet is open so I would recommend that you leave them unpainted. Plus if you don’t paint the inside of the cabinets you don’t have to remove everything from inside the cabinets.

Make certain that the room you are painting the cabinets in is well ventilated because the oil based primer and paint does have a very strong odor. Consider using a fan placed by an open door or window to help and pull the fumes out of the house.

Step 1. Take off all of the cabinet hardware including all knobs, handles and pulls. Cover all countertops and flooring using drop cloths or tarps. Leave the doors attached. Using painters tape, tape all the hinges on the doors.

Step 2. Clean cabinets thoroughly using a cleaning solution such as TSP. This is a cleaning agent which is readily available at most hardware stores. Wash the exterior of all the cabinets that are to be painted using your cleaning solution. Allow the cabinets to fully dry and then sand them to a dull finish using a fine grit sandpaper.

Step 3. Prime cabinets using a good oil based primer such Read the rest of this entry

Guide to Remodeling a Kitchen

Kawaii Kitchen

A kitchen remodel can be an exciting and creative activity for a homeowner; as with every remodel it is advisable to start with a budget in mind and work according to a plan. There is a lot you can do with a kitchen remodel; kitchen cabinets, sinks, exhaust fans, sinks, kitchen islands, curtains, lighting, countertops, backsplash, faucets, furniture, tiles, etc can be replaced or repaired to give a whole new look to your kitchen. You should get an idea of the costs involved in a remodel and then plan the remodel to fit your budget.

Before starting a remodeling project, it is important to obtain a building permit well in advance because municipalities may take time to process the permit application.

Kitchen roofs can be kept a little higher so as to give the kitchen a different feel from the rest of the house and the kitchen can be moved adjacent to the dining area so that service from the kitchen is made easy.

In kitchens, where space is a constraint a remodel offers the opportunity to remove items and accessories that are rarely used and create some space. The kitchen space can be made more appealing visually by varying the height of the countertops and using cabinets of different sizes with different styles of doors. Contrasts can be achieved by using light wood stains for the islands and darker ones for the cabinets. A remodel is also the time to hide unsightly appliances by installing panels that can cover Read the rest of this entry
